Digitalni potpis i digitalni sertifikat

Digitalni potpis se koristi za potpisivanje e-mail poruka, i njime garantujemo pošiljaoca i integritet poruke.
Obično se kao potpis kriptuje samo hash or digest poruke.
Digitalni sertifikat se koristi za kriptovanje celih poruka/dokumenata, tako da ih može “otšifrovati” samo osoba kojoj je poruka namenjena.

U oba slučaja se mogu koristiti kriptografski ključevi.
Ako se i za šifrovanje i za dešifrovanje koristi isti ključ, to je simetrična kriptografija. Ovo zahteva startnu razmenu datog ključa.
Ako se za šifrovanje i dešifrovanje koriste različiti ključevi (prtivatni odnosno javni ključevi), to je asimetrična kriptografija. Ovaj postupak ne zahteva nikakvu prvobitnu razmenu ključeva.
